Hello, Many years ago I asked some builders to make an electric viol. Many just laughed. Finally Hubert Dufour built one :

I used it a for a recording with the guitarist Fred Frith in 2005 that still hasn't been released. The idea is to be able to use the viol in a contemporary context, whether it be in a rock band, jazz or contemporary music with amplified instruments. As the viol is much like a bowed guitar the instrument is very useful in many contexts. I then played an electric viol during two nights last October (2006) in the garden of Versailles for Versailles Off. Pictures here :

The instrument was very good by François Danger :

(look at the bottom of the page).
The great advantage of the electric viol is the possibility to use it with a synthesizer/computer. Thanks to the Centre de Musique Baroque in Versailles I met Benjamin Morando a computer music virtuoso. Working with him helped me with his help come up with the idea of using a Scherfler captor microphone.

This way any viol can be amùplified. I therefore use any of my viols now, often my six string viol by Judith Kraft built in Paris in 1994. Therefore we call this instrument an amplified and not an electric viol.
I've started recording sound for films and am working on a new CD with Benjamin Morando. Let me know if you need anything else.
Best, Jonathan Dunford, Paris

Auf die Rückfragen, Were do you place the pick- up? Did you use a solo amplifier? if you do, witch one? Antwortete Jonathan Dunford:
...................................................................................................
I've discovered that depending on what I want to do I put the pick up in different places. That is in "acoustic formation" that is playing through speakers just amplified I of course can change the sound to have more or less bass. That is under the bridge near the top strings = more treble and of course the contrary near the bass strings = more bass.
In this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL8H52i8EwY
if you look carefully around 2'11" you'll see the pick up (not mine the sound engineers provided their own).
If I'm playing with a synthesizer all is different and depends on what we want to do. The amplifier I usually have provided by the studio or concert venue (the photo has a picture of one of them) ...................................................................................................
